Uluberia, India, March 2025. atmosfair doubles the size of our biochar and biofertilizer production in eastern India. We are opening our second factory in the Uluberia region, where we process biochar into biofertilizer. This carbon-based fertilizer binds carbon in the soil in the long term when used in the fields. At the same time, we are equipping a further 30,000 households with Top-Lit Updraft (TLUD) stoves, which produce biochar during cooking, from which we manufacture the fertilizer.

Thirty people attended the factory’s opening ceremony and took part in the puja ritual with a Hindu priest. The priest made offerings to deity Krishna and lit a light to ensure a good future for the company. Moulindu Barnerjee, managing director of our local partner company Sapient Infotech, is already convinced of its success: “With the factory’s modern machines, we will process 1,000 tons of biochar into fertilizer every month. This will not only improve the soil, but also create jobs in production.”

30,000 additional households get TLUD stoves

Our new factory employs a total of 72 people: 60 employees collect the biochar from households, while 12 others work in the factory itself, mixing the biochar with dolomite and compost. Before they start their new jobs, we train all employees in the use of the machines and the work processes.

Sales representatives learn how to determine the quality of the biochar they buy from households with TLUD stoves.

With the new factory in Uluberia, we are expanding our biochar project into a new region. We have already been producing fertilizer in a factory in Kaukepara, east of Kolkata, since January 2024; the biochar used comes from the TLUD stoves of a total of 30,000 households there. Through our expansion west of Kolkata, we are increasing the number of participating households from 30,000 to 60,000. Uluberia is a fast-growing region in West Bengal that is characterized by agriculture. With the new production facility, we are strengthening the agricultural sector and supporting local households.

When farmers fertilize their fields with fertilizer made from biochar, they not only improve the fertility of the soil. The carbon that the plants have previously extracted from the atmosphere remains in the soil in the long term. In this way, we ensure negative CO₂ emissions for climate protection.

To inaugurate our factory, a Brahmin performs a ritual in honor of the Hindu deity Krishna.
